With a goal to help prevent unethical behavior in the business world, Dr. Richard G. Linowes has excelled in a career spanning four decades. At the beginning of his career, he was an affiliate at Matsushita Electric Industrial Company, Ltd. in Osaka, Japan in 1974 before joining Arthur Anderson & Co. in Washington, D.C. as a senior systems analyst, serving until 1977. Subsequently, he gained valuable expertise as a research assistant at the Harvard Business School from 1978 to 1982, a consultant with Goldman Sachs from 1983 to 1986 and a Kogod Outstanding professor of undergraduate programs for the Kogod School of Business at American University from 1986 to 2019.

Backed by an abundance of expertise, Dr. Linowes continues to excel as the founding professor and president of Clarewood University, as well as an educator of the United States Department of State’s Foreign Services Institute since 2003. Over the years, he has also been a visiting professor at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, Tel Aviv University in Israel and New York University. To remain abreast of his field, Dr. Linowes maintains membership with the International Personnel Management Association for Human Resources, the International Public Management Association for Human Resources and the Association of Japanese Business Studies. He is also a member of the Fulbright Association, the Princeton Club and the Harvard Club.

To prepare for his professional endeavors, Dr. Linowes earned a Bachelor of Arts in cybernetics from Princeton University in 1973 and a Master of Science in computer and communications sciences from the University of Michigan in 1975. Later, he obtained a Doctor of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1984. Alongside his degrees, Dr. Linowes is honored to have been the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship for Pedagogical Innovation to New Zealand in 1989. Additionally, he was part of the team that extended the Baldrige National Quality Award, which honors companies and nonprofits that demonstrate “outstanding performance,” to the field of educators in 1994; he helped to write criteria for self-assessment that educational institutions can use to improve their performance. He also finds great fulfillment in contributing to his community as a volunteer at local schools and vice president of the HOA.

Upon reflection, Dr. Linowes considers a career highlight was attending the inaugural meeting of the Kogod Alumni Network of Greater New York, which was attended by 30 of his former students. He also values the extensive trips that he took to visit American and Japanese companies. Likewise, he greatly enjoys meeting with former students around the globe during these excursions. Looking ahead, Dr. Linowes intends to continue working toward his mission, which is to “build enlightened leaders.”  He enjoys landscaping, photography, singing and traveling in his spare time.
